Udaipur Travel Guide-Things to do in Udaipur

Udaipur, the city of lakes as we call it, is also known as the white city. It’s one of the most royal and historic city of India. With the numerous palaces, museums and the “Oh! so lovely” lakes, it greets every one royally with arms wide open.

So back in April, 2019, I was in Udaipur on a solo trip around Rajasthan, and well, what can be better than starting to write my experiences from the third most traveled to, place in India, Udaipur.

About Udaipur

The white city of Udaipur, is the jewel of Rajasthan, surrounded by the Arravalli hills and numerous serene lakes. It’s a heaven for architecture enthusiasts because of the innumerable palaces and museums.

It used to be the cabital of Mewar, founded by Maharana Udai Singh II in the year 1558, and named after him, Udaipur remained the capital of Mewar till 1818, when it became a princely state under the British rule.

How to reach Udaipur

Udaipur being one of the most popular tourist destination in India, is well connected by all means of transportation. The choice is yours, depending on your budget and convenience.

By Air

Udaipur is well connected via airways, with daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur and a few other cities, to it’s Maharana Pratap Airport. Even though airfares are often high!

By Railways

By rail, Udaipur is well connected with cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Jaipur, Ahmedabad and a few others. The railways often take a lot of time, but if you have the extra bit of time, you can always avail it, and sleep your way through the journey!

By Road

Bus

The best possible way to reach Udaipur, as per my choice, is by bus. Udaipur has great connectivity of bussses from Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Jaipur, Jodhpur and mostly all other cities of Rajasthan. It’s cheap and convenient. It’s highly advisable to take a flight till Jaipur, Delhi or Ahmedabad and take a bus from there on till the city of lakes. It saves a lot of time and money.

Car / Bike

Udaipur is connected by road to all the major cities, and the NH8 is a smooth drive, so a road trip is always great.

Where to stay in Udaipur?

Udaipur has a vast range of hotels, hostels and homestays. You can opt to stay at Udaipur Leela Palace or Udaipur Lake Palace if you want to spend huge and feel the luxury, or you can easily choose from a number of hostels, if you’re a backpacker on a budget. Well i stayed in a homestay from Airbnb, a bit secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city, and would highly recommend the same.

Places To See in Udaipur

City Palace

Well this place goes without even saying. Probably the most Instagramable place, so make sure not to miss this one! Tickets to this lovely piece of architecture costs Rs. 250 per adult, Rs. 100 for children above 5, and for any type of cameras they charge Rs. 250. However, if you’re a student carry your ID card, the ticket along with a camera would cost Rs. 100.

Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola is the most popular of all the lakes in Udaipur, because of the two islands situated on the lake, the Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas was the summer palace of the royal dynasty and now it’s the well known hotel Taj Lake Palace.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Another major attraction is Fateh Sagar Lake, the vast stretch of lake is best for spending some quality time with your loved one over some soothing cold coffee or if you’re a foodie go for a plate of tawa pulao from the shops around Fateh Sagar Lake. It’s a popular spot for the locals too, they often spend some time here with family and friends.

Karni Mata Temple

I’m thinking while I’m writing this, you’d doubt how can I write about a temple as a must visit, when I’m not that devotional. Well, this place comes with an added benefit. Apart from the main attraction of the temple, this place comes with a view to die for. One needs to take the ropeway to reach here and the timings are an issue here, research a bit before going. Well, I was there just to experience the sunset, and boy oh boy, my day was made! On one side was the view of the sun setting behind the arravallis with lake pichola in the foreground and on the other side was the moon rise and the city lighting up. This is a must visit!!!

Sajjan Garh (Monsoon Palace)

Here comes another marvel to experience breathtaking sunsets. Situated atop of a hill, this palace gives magnificent sunset view. However, i could not visit this place because of shortage of time! So keeping it for next time, while if you’ve been to this place write down in the comments how it is!

Badi Lake

This place is not a popular tourist destination, but this place is so serene that it comes under my recomendation of must visits in Udaipur. There’s a bahubali hill, which you can climb to get some Instagram worthy shots to show off! Also sunsets here are different and crazy. If you want a place secluded from the buzz, visit this and thank me later by commenting.

Where to Eat in Udaipur?

• A meal at Ambrai, the very popular restaurant on the banks of lake Pichola, is a must
• Find the small egg shop called Egg World, and try their Tandoori Omlette, it is to die for!
• Harigarh, near chandpole ghat, offers some scenic views and also you can hear the chanting of prayers, their laal maas is great, also they have some kind of papad topped with salad which i supposedly liked.
• Vinod Cafe in Fateh Sagar Lake, offers some good cold coffee, so you can grab some and walk till you find a place to sit near the lake.
• Almost all Puchka, Golgappa, Panipuri shops or whatever they call it there are crazy and is worth a try, they have great variations.
• Kulfi throughout Udaipur is the authentic rabri kulfi, and they taste heavenly.

How to get around the city?

Well, there are plenty of options of travelling in Udaipur, from Rickshaws to Cabs and what not. Yet, the best way to explore Udaipur is by renting a bike or a scooty as they are cheap and convenient.
